Mesita is the musical project of James Cooley. The project started in 2008 in Cooley's home state of Colorado, and has been ongoing since then. His discography currently boasts 11 albums and 6 EPs, as well as 1 compilation album, 2 live albums, and 1 instrumental album. Many of his songs contain references to his mental health and his sexuality, making for a very honest discography of songs that speak to Cooley's own experiences.
You can locate Mesita's website at mesitamusic.com where you can stream and/or download his discography, as well as donate to him.
What is he up to now?
Currently, Cooley is working on his next up album, K/D Ratio 0:1, with a single planned for August 2023, full album out September 2023! To keep updated with his progress on the album, follow him over at his Instagram.
Where can I listen to his music?
Your best bet is his SoundCloud, which contains all of his music from 2008 up until now. (Including demos of new and old songs!) His songs are also on Spotify, however Cooley's dislike for the platform has made it the inferior listening platform for his music. There is also the option to download his entire discography via Google Drive if you prefer to have it saved.
I personally have been working on reuploading his music to YouTube for archival purposes, having uploaded Living/Breathing, Here's to Nowhere, and Future Proof. Others have done their part in archiving his music on YouTube, to which I have compiled a playlist for people's listening pleasure.
Complimentary, I have also worked on compiling the lyrics (as well as factoids to his songs and albums) to all of his songs over on Genius! This took me about 3 months and I'm not close to done yet. This came from taking things from the Internet Archive, various local Colorado radio station websites, and my own copies of his work. At the moment, the biggest gap I've come across in information is the lyrics to the songs from his album Cherry Blossoms. If you have any information and/or would like to help with this process, please do!
FAQ
Mesita? Why Mesita?
Cooley chose the name Mesita (which translates to "little table" in Spanish) after the city of the same name in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. He made an EP, the Small Table EP, poking at the double meaning behind his name back in 2016.
Where is Cooley now?
Cooley now resides in Astoria, a neighborhood in Queens, New York. Many of his recent album covers contain him taking pictures of common views he witnesses in New York. He recently revisited the site of the cover for Eat Ass or Die Trying Deluxe, as posted on his Instagram.
You mentioned his sexuality previously. What did you mean by that?
Cooley is gay. In a deleted YouTube video, Cooley had also stated that he identified as genderqueer, however that may not be up to date anymore. Many of his songs contain the subject matter of growing up in a pre-Obergfell America (especially with his album Future Proof as stated in an interview with Complex in 2012), as well as simply existing as a gay person since the legalization of gay marriage in 2015.
